The sound of little Sammieâs voice echoed down the hall to my office, making me smile. I loved that he spent so much time at my house. It was nice having a little one running around. Not quite a grandchild. I was far too young for that. But like a nephew.
And if Sammie was here, so were his parents and probably siblings, ready to go to the ball. I hurried out of my office and to the front of the house. Olivia, Sam, Jess, and Devan stood in the foyer talking with Zoey and Larry about watching Sammie.
They looked amazing. Like royalty. âOh my goodness, you guys look great.â I couldnât stop my eyes from misting.
Olivia wore a hunter-green A-line style gown with ivy embroidered up one side of the dress in a light green thread. The gown brushed the floor and had a small train in the back that Olivia had clipped to her bracelet.
Jess wore a light blue mermaid-style gown. The bottom of the dress looked like it had peacock feathers on it. Both of them wore shoes similar to the ones Iâd worn when I went there. Easier for walking on the moss and grass of the Fae realm without having heels sinking into the ground.
The guys both wore black tuxes. Their jackets had tails. And each of them had a single white rose in their breast pockets. So elegant.
Sam scrunched up his nose and fidgeted with his jacket. âThanks, I guess.â
Olivia laughed at him as she adjusted his tie and smoothed down the front of the jacket. âI have a feeling that weâll have to get used to dressing up for my family functions.â
I agreed. From what Iâd gathered, the fae loved their lavish parties and celebrations. But, I wouldnât be doing my job as Samâs lifelong BFF if I didnât pick on him. âI wasnât talking to you, Sam. I was talking to Jess and Devan.â
The kids chuckled softly, picking up that I was teasing Sam. Jess added, a bit begrudgingly, âHe does clean up pretty good.â
Sam stilled for a breath of a moment as if he hadnât expected a compliment from her. I was a little surprised myself.
Itâd been hard for Jess to accept Sam as her stepfather. Olivia and I suspected Carter had filled the kids with a bunch of crap that turned them against the mother, so they instantly hadnât trusted Sam. I was happy to see that they were starting to come around and accept their step-dad. He desperately wanted to bond with them.
Olivia stepped forward. âHave you heard from Hailey?â
I shook my head. âNot since she told me to wait on her and Jax to be ready so they can help us in Milan.â
âYou guys have fun. Donât worry about Sammie. He can stay the night.â I pulled Olivia and Sam into a group hug. Then, I ushered them out the door and waved as they walked through a portal Olivia created into the fae world.
